Andhra Pradesh government has embarked on an ambitious journey, forging partnership with key player in the energy efficiency domain seeking expertise of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of national PSUs under the Ministry of Power to usher in cutting-edge energy efficiency technologies to fortify power generation and supply, and achieving sustainability in the sector.

According to a statement issued by EESL, AP is proactively enhancing industrial power supply to accommodate rising industrial activities in the State. Disclosing this, Special Chief Secretary, Energy, K Vijayanand during interaction with EESL senior executives Animesh Mishra, Savitri Singh, Adesh Saxena, Ashish and Pawan said that in collaboration with EESL, the Energy Department is keen for advanced energy-efficient global technologies in the areas of energy efficiency to ensure power sector sustainability.

An integrated approach, involving various departments and utilities, is being orchestrated to expedite energy efficiency initiatives within the State with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and EESL playing pivotal roles in stimulating the State’s economy through enhanced energy efficiency, Vijayanand stated.

In response, EESL CEO Vishal Kapoor who participated virtually agreed in-principle to provide support, aiming to enhance power reliability in particular by imparting latest technologies for fostering economic growth and sustainability in the region. As of October 3, 2023, India’s UJALA initiative has distributed over 36.86 crore LED bulbs, 72.18 lakh LED Tube lights, and 23.59 lakh energy-efficient fans, leading to remarkable outcomes. These efforts have resulted in an annual energy savings of 48.42 billion kWh, a reduction in peak demand by 9,789 MW, and a significant cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 39.30 million tones of CO2.

Moreover, consumers are benefiting from an annual monetary savings of Rs 19,334 crore on electricity bills. Beyond the numbers, UJALA has played a vital role in the Make in India campaign by fostering a thriving domestic market for LED bulbs and promoting local manufacturing.
